The study, which analyzed data from 23 countries, highlights the global relevance of these findings and underscores the need for targeted care strategies for affected populations, published in PLOS One.

The study, conducted by visiting PhD scholar Ms. Debora Barbosa Ronca, revealed a consistent association between obesity and a range of long-term post-COVID symptoms such as memory problems, sleep disturbances, and vertigo. While the exact mechanisms remain unclear, researchers suggest that excess fatty tissue may trigger an exaggerated inflammatory response or even aid the SARS-CoV-2 virus in entering and spreading within the body.

Ms. Ronca emphasized the global significance of the findings, noting that the inclusion of diverse populations points to widespread implications. Some studies indicate that these symptoms can persist for 12 months or longer, requiring extended medical intervention.

“We anticipated some level of association between excess weight and post-COVID-19 symptoms, but the consistency across neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms was striking,” said Ms. Ronca. “This population may require closer monitoring and multidisciplinary care approaches to address their unique needs.”

The study underscores the importance of integrating weight management, mental health support, and rehabilitation into post-COVID care plans.
