Published in BMJ Tobacco Control, the paper reveals that most studies fail to evaluate how tobacco policies affect men and women differently, potentially undermining efforts to help smokers quit. The findings come ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, emphasizing the need for gender-sensitive approaches.

The research team, including Mathieu Poirier, Tina Nanyangwe-Moyo, and Laura R. Pereira, analyzed 43 peer-reviewed studies on tobacco control. They found that only five assessed the gender-specific impacts of policies, despite evidence that smoking behaviors and cessation success vary by gender.

Poirier, Director of the Global Strategy Lab (GSL), noted, “Gender is a key factor in tobacco use, yet research often overlooks it. This limits our ability to design effective policies.” Nanyangwe-Moyo added that current studies offer superficial comparisons but lack deeper gender analysis, which could improve cessation programs worldwide.

Globally, tobacco use remains prevalent, with 36.7% of men and 7.8% of women using tobacco products in 2020, according to the World Health Organization. In Canada, smoking rates are declining, but disparities persist (14.8% of men vs. 10.2% of women). The study focused on cigarette smoking due to its significant harm as the leading preventable cause of premature death.

The study underscores the urgency of integrating gender perspectives into tobacco research to develop tailored policies. Future work by GSL will explore this intersection further, aiming to bridge the gap and enhance global smoking cessation efforts.

A new study led by York University researchers highlights a critical gap in tobacco control research: the lack of gender-based analysis.
