Published in Journal of Thoracic Disease, a single-center retrospective analysis, the research found significantly higher KL-6 levels in ILD patients compared to those with ILA, suggesting its potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and guide treatment decisions.

The study, conducted on 147 patients suspected of ILD, revealed that KL-6 levels averaged 968.8 U/mL in the ILD group, more than double the 411.6 U/mL observed in the ILA group. This stark difference, with a statistical significance of P<0.001, underscores KL-6’s utility in distinguishing severe lung conditions from milder abnormalities.

Using a threshold of 410 U/mL, KL-6 demonstrated moderate diagnostic performance, with 80.8% sensitivity and 64.7% specificity. Additionally, higher KL-6 levels correlated with reduced forced vital capacity, further supporting its role in assessing disease severity.

“Our findings highlight KL-6’s potential as a non-invasive tool to identify patients needing urgent intervention,” noted the lead author.

The study advocates for integrating KL-6 testing into clinical practice to enhance early ILD detection and management. Future research could focus on standardizing KL-6 thresholds and validating these results across diverse populations.

A recent study has identified Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) as a promising biomarker for differentiating between interstitial lung disease (ILD) and interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA).
